Since September 2002 a Bournemouth primary school has encouraged children to drink water during lessons, they found it had a positive impact.

Stephen Orman, the head teacher said "Since embarking on this excercise, we've found that pupils are concentrating more, they get fewer headaches and are more relaxed. The children themselves have said it makes them feel fresh. Parents too are saying that their children are not so tired when they go home.

According to a survey two thirds of children do not drink enough water, and a fifth of children drink no water at all.

Most of us understand the importance of ensuring we're properly hydrated, but what about our children? Don't they deserve the same?

Children should drink around 6-8 glasses a day. However a health survey found that 10% of schools provide NO drinking water for their pupils and 28% had only one tap, usually in the toilet!

Yet for around a £1.00 per pupil per annum we can provide quality, crystal clear, great tasting, chilled water, at all times.

There's nothing cool about a lack of fresh drinking water at school for kids...

A campaign launched by ERIC, and sponsored by AquAid has been raising awareness of the fact that our children do not have adequate access to quality drinking water at school.

Encouraging children to drink water is not a new concept. When children do not drink enough research has shown that there are implications on long term health, performance and concentration.

Here is what other people have thought about the subject:

We know the importance of drinking water and have two water coolers inside and two fountains outside, we bring bottles to school and fill them up so we can drink to keep being active learners all through the day.

Mrs Jenny Worthington, St Margaret Clitherow Catholic Primary School

Our pupils and staff are drinking a lot more water since installing six plumbed in water coolers. We are very happy with the service provided by AquAid and having water coolers has caused no disruption in the classroom.

Dinah Surfleet, Finance Officer Staplehurst Junior School

Children are our heritage and our future. If we neglect to supply them with adequate high quality water, we run the risk of negating the importance of liquid intake. Our children’s health has to be our number one priority.
